SUMMARY:Integrate Webinar: "After the Storm: Pathways to Forest Recovery and Restoration in Ireland and Beyond"
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of Storm Eowyn – which occurred on 24. January 2025 and brought unprecedented wind speeds and widespread disruption across Ireland – forest landscapes have suffered significant damage across the country. This Integrate Network webinar\, organized under the “Forest Restoration Talks” series in collaboration with SUPERB Project\, TRANSFORMIT project and FoRISK facility\, brings together forestry professionals\, environmental scientists\, policymakers\, and a landowner to examine the extent and nature of the storm-related damage in Ireland as well as look at other European examples of major forest disturbances. \nTogether\, we’ll explore the immediate impacts\, assess longer-term ecological and economic implications\, and discuss practices for recovery\, resilience planning and climate adaptation measures. \nKey Themes and Questions: \n– How can we better deal with future disturbances across European forests? \n– How do we transform / adapt our forests to make them more climate resilient? \n– What can we learn from past experiences to recover and restore forests in an integrative way? \n– What are current preliminary findings on storm damage across different forest types and regions? \n– What are strategies to salvage logging\, replant and protect biodiversity after storm damage? \n– How can policy and funding from government and EU support recovery? \nDate and time: 11 June 2025\, 4:00 PM CET \nPlatform: Zoom\, register here \nSpeakers: \n– Noel Kelly\, Irish forest owner majorly affected by storm Éowyn. \n– Christophe Orazio from IEFC (Aquitaine\, France) brings in knowledge and expertise on forest risk management and climate change adaptation. \n– Jo O’Hara is a professional Chartered Forester\, director of FutureArk Ltd and a non-executive board member of Forestry and Land Scotland. She brings in policy and strategy expertise in relation to change management. \n– Fergus Moore\, Head of the Forest Sector Development Division at the Department of Agriculture\, Food and Marine\, Ireland \n– Carolin Stiehl from Wald & Holz NRW brings in expertise on forest management and restoration implications after major forest disturbance.

SUMMARY:Forest Ecosystem Resilience through Biodiversity - Nature's Insurance Policy in a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:Forest ecosystems in many parts of Europe and worldwide are increasingly affected by a changing climate and increased disturbances. We can expect that certain tree species\, but also entire forest ecosystems will come under threat or may no longer be able to cope with such rapidly changing conditions. \nTo improve the resilience of our forests\, is it enough to rely on an existing set of tree species or to introduce those that we hope will be better adapted to future climatic conditions? Do we sufficiently consider forest ecosystem functioning as a whole\, including biodiversity above and below ground? How can we respond to unforeseeable climatic phenomena in forest management? \nWith this webinar\, we want to reflect upon how we can support forest ecosystems to better cope with current and future climate change impacts. After introducing how forest resilience can be defined and operationalized\, we will investigate the role of biodiversity in forests\, what potential trade-offs are\, and what forest decision-makers and practitioners can do to increase forest ecosystems resilience. \nDon’t miss this discussion and register here.
