SUMMARY:Integrate Network Communications Workshop: “Engaging with Media”
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to find out why journalists tend to take certain perspectives when it comes to how we use our forest? Why do they echo specific voices while others remain unheard? Do you want to learn how to communicate better with the media and what makes information newsworthy? \n\n\n \nIn our second Integrate Communications Workshop\, we will focus on “Engaging with Media”. Together with science and environmental journalists\, we will learn how media mechanisms work and what they are seeking to hear from policymakers\, practitioners and researchers. Jointly\, we will also discuss the language to use when communicating with media\, and how you can “pitch” your narrative and engage better with the journalists. \n\n\n \nAhead of the meeting\, you will be asked to develop a short verbal narrative to share with a journalist and the group. The selected participants will receive an instruction ahead of the meeting. The training is part of a series aiming at bringing together a diverse group from forest policy\, forest practice\, nature conservation stakeholders\, researchers\, and journalists to jointly improve their communication skills\, exchange perspectives and learn from each other. \n\n\n \nThe workshop will be closed-shop to enable a safe space for interpersonal interaction. Therefore\, we will only allow 21 participants to register. To make a complementary selection and guarantee we can rely on your participation please send an email with a short “application” (explanation of why you would like to join the workshop and what you are aiming at learning\, ca. 1/2 page) to gesche.schifferdecker(at)efi.int. Before applying\, please consider that this workshop will focus on the European context. \n\n\n \nSchedule: \n\n\n \nWhat you should know about today’s journalism and media10:30-10:45 \n\n\n \nA day in the life of a feature editor – a fireside chat with Josh Howgego\, features editor at New Scientist10:45-11:15 \n\n\n \nDiscussion: Why this narrative works better than the other?11:15-12:00 \n\n\n \nBreak12:00-12:30 \n\n\n \nPractical Exercise: What do journalists think about your narrative?12:30-13:30 \n\n\n \nReflection and the exchange of experiences13:30-14:00 \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Integrate Network Communications Workshops - Workshop 1: Building a Narrative
DESCRIPTION:How should we best manage our forests? This is the guiding question behind the virtual communication workshop series the secretariat of the European Integrate Network is initiating. Being aware that there is no single answer to this question\, in our first training on “Building a Narrative”\, we would like to engage with you to develop narratives for your proposed solutions and effectively communicate with those who might have different perspectives. The workshop will provide the opportunities for exchanging perspectives and listen to the stories others tell to define the best communications approaches to respond to the guiding question. \nAs a result of the training\, you will gain fundamental knowledge about effective communication and narrative development and learn to communicate more convincingly to different audiences. You will also receive a certificate for your active participation. \nThe training series aims at bringing together a diverse group from forest policy\, forest practice\, nature conservation stakeholders\, researchers and journalists to jointly improve their communication skills\, exchange perspectives and learn from each other. \nAll the workshops will be closed-shop to enable a safe space for interpersonal interaction. Therefore\, we will only allow 21 participants to register. To make sure we can rely on your participation please send an email with a short “application” (explanation of why you would like to join the workshop and what you are aiming at learning\, ca. 1/2 page) to gesche.schifferdecker (at) efi.int. Before applying\, please consider that this workshop will focus on the European context. \n  \n10:30-11:00 Understanding the problem with narrative development \nWhat is a ‘narrative’ and why is it important to respond to the question “How should we best manage our forests?”.  This session will provide a big picture perspective on the power of narrative and storytelling and discuss the challenges with developing a narrative that “works”. \n11:00-12:00 Understanding the differences in perspectives and consider the opposite \nTo go deeper into understanding the challenge we face as a practioner\, researcher and policy-maker in communicating our positions\, we will take a step back to discover what type of different interests and priorities exist and how they influence the way people interpret your narrative. \n12:00-12:30: Break \n12:30-13:30: Building a Narrative from human-centered design approach \nAfter exploring the complexity and challenges with narrative development\, we will explore some of the approaches and tools that can help you formulate a narrative that reaches a wide range of people beyond your ‘usual’ target group. \n13:30-14:00: Reflecting and exchanging experiences \nThe day will end with group reflections and sharing new ideas that emerged from the session to take the next steps beyond the workshop.

SUMMARY:Integrate Webinar: The European Green Deal - What is in it for forests and forestry in times of Covid and Greta?
DESCRIPTION:The European Green deals sets out to transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society\, with a modern\, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050 and where economic growth is decoupled from resource use. It also aims to protect\, conserve and enhance the EU’s natural capital. Regarding forests and forestry\, this may have a broad spectrum of implications connected to the various ecosystem services and goods forests provide\, from forest biomass to biodiversity and climate change mitigation\, but also responding to changing societal demands towards forests. In this seminar\, we seek to explore policy visions on the role of forests in the Green Deal\, asking the following questions: \n\n\n\nPresentation by Humberto Delgado RosaPresentation by Andrew DoylePresentation by Georg Winkel\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat approach should Europe take/implement on forests in the Green Deal?\nHow to deal with key issues such as climate change\, biodiversity\, bioeconomy and societal expectations\, and also trade-offs between these issues when it comes to integrated forest management?\nWhat is the impact of Covid on the Green Deal in relation to forests? What needs to be done?\nWhat is the role of integrated forest management approaches that aim to integrate forest use and conservation in European policy?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter\n\n\nFacebook

SUMMARY:Multiple scales for nature conservation in sustainable forest management: integration and segregation
DESCRIPTION:This is the first of two meetings organised by Denmark as Chair of the European Network Integrate. The first one (29-31 October 2019) main topic was Integration of nature conservation measures: scale\, connectivity\, interaction and their effects on biodiversity. The venue was the Rold Forest near Rebild south of Aalborg. \nRelated documents\n\nGeneral information on Danish Chairmanship events\nProgram of 5th meeting of the European Network Integrate\n\nThis was an excellent opportunity to learn from their example and compare the different pros and cons of various models. Denmark is in the process of doubling the state forest area to be set-a-side for biodiversity to a total of 20%. The development in society and climatic changes request us to find a balance between the resources and services our forests can provide. How does Denmark implement integration and segregation of biodiversity conservation in forest policy and management? What are the reflections of research and other European countries? The above focus are crosscutting for two Danish events. Special attention will be given to the following topics: protecting biodiversity elements at forest level\, forest restoration for conservation\, stakeholder involvement\, forests dynamics\, climate change\, succession\, trade-offs. \nPresentations\n\nWelcoming words by Peter Ilsøe\, Danish Nature Agency\nIntroduction to the Integrate Network by Georg Winkel\, European Forest Institute\nDanish Chairmanship by Mads Jensen\, Danish Nature Agency\nIntegrating nature conservation into multifunctional forest by Jørgen Bo Larsen\, University of Copenhagen\nIntegrating conservation into forestry by Adam Felton\, Swedish University for Agricultural Sciences\nRold excursion by Bendt Egede\, Danish Nature Agency\nParticipation in forest planning and nature conservation by Anna Lawrence\, University of Highlands and Islands\nSurvey results by Agata Konczal\, EFI\nDanish stakeholders’ involvement by Mads Jensen\, Danish Nature Agency\nNGO perspective on stakeholders’ involvement on forest management by Torbjørn Eriksen\, Danish Outdoor Council\nBiodiversity monitoring by Georg Frank\, Austrian Federal Research Centre for Forests\nPeople engagement and species reintroduction by Andrew Stringer\, Forestry England\nMarteloscope in Bosco Pennataro by Giovanni Santopuoli\, University of Molise\nClose-to-nature silviculture in Luxembourg by Michel Leytem\, Luxembourg Nature and Forest Agency\nState Forests cooperation with stakeholders on forest management by Anna Żornaczuk-Łuba\, Polish State Forests Enterprise\nForest Monitoring and Management by Krzysztof Sterenczak\, Polish Forest Research Institute\nOpportunities and challenges for integrating nature conservation in managed forest by Agata Konczal\, EFI\nNetwork outcomes by Georg Winkel\, EFI\nNetwork Brochure by Jose Bolaños\, EFI\nINFORMAR and Network Evaluation by Michael Hoppe\, independent consultant

SUMMARY:Discussions on and in the forest: European Network INTEGRATE kick-off
DESCRIPTION:What do you get when you put together forest policy experts from 16 different European countries and the European Commission with scientists and forest practitioners? Lively and insightful discussions\, determination to find new solutions and\, of course\, outings in the forest. \nThe kick-off meeting of the European network “Integrate” took place in Bonn\, Germany\, on 26-27 June. Hosted by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Germany (BMEL)\, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic\, and facilitated by EFI’s Bonn office\, the event attracted about 50 participants interested in the exchange of ideas relating to the need for successful integration of nature conservation into sustainable forest management across Europe. \nThe foundations of the European “Integrate” network were laid by the lessons learned and outcomes of EFI’s former projects INTEGRATE/INTEGRATE+ funded by the BMEL. These projects explored the scientific basis for integrating nature conservation into forest management\, and established a European network of demonstration sites for integrated forest management. The European Integrate network aims to enable cross-border and cross-sectoral learning related to integrated forest management at the policy level\, offering an active interface between policy and research. \n \nThe kick-off meeting started with an opening from Matthias Schwoerer from BMEL\, Tomas Krejzar from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic and Georg Winkel from EFI. The subsequent keynote presentations gave light to some examples of integrating nature conservation into sustainable forest management in Germany and Poland. They also provided insights from research regarding the possibilities\, but also challenges\, to implement integrated forest management in practice. Participants visited forest areas near Bonn to get first-hand experience with a Marteloscope plot\, installed as part of the INTEGRATE/INTEGRATE+ project. \nThe second day allowed participants to find out more about challenges of and possible solutions for integrated forest management in different European countries. Three research projects conducted by EFI’s Associate Members on integrated forest management were presented: the ConFoBiproject (University of Freiburg)\, the InFormed project (led by INRA)\, and oForest (led by the Swiss WSL). EFI Bonn’s new project InForMAr (Integrated Forest Management Learning Architecture)\, was also presented. InForMAr aims to build and maintain a transnational learning architecture between scientists\, policy makers and practitioners with regards to integrated forest management and to understand the current and future ecological\, socio-political and economic driving forces related to this approach at a European scale. \nFrom plans to action – what’s next?\nThe participants expressed their appreciation for the event and their interest in continuing the European Integrate Network initiative. The Czech Ministry of Agriculture offered to conduct the next meeting of the Network in 2018 in Prague. \nEFI Bonn will provide scientific support and facilitate further activities of the network with its InforMAr project\, thus contributing scientific knowledge to an ongoing exchange of European policy experts on the integration of nature conservation into sustainable forest management in Europe. \nMore information\nRead the report of the meeting
