On Thursday, April 23, Dominik Saladin from Forst Baden-Württemberg visited with three foresters in training (Benedikt Debes, Louise Harms and Daniel Zeggl) the Freiburg City Forest Enterprise and there the Mooswald with the forest district manager Markus Müller, who is also the managing director of the WaldHaus Freiburg.
Dominik being Deputy Forest Head for the Southern Black Forest District based in the town of St. Blasien said that due to being more in the highlands of the southern Black Forest, teaching oak management in other than regeneration stands does not go beyond theory. That is why he dedicated a full day for his foresters in training to get exposed to oak management in the Freiburg City Forest. Besides other earlier stops jointly with Markus Müller, one was planned at the Integrate Network marteloscope “Mooswald” which is situated in a mature oak stand. This was therefore a perfect place to discuss, in this case, oak management in a former coppice with standards forest and especially how to further develop such a stand.
Andreas Schuck was also present to explain marteloscopes, present the software, and showcase how training can be applied. He then encouraged Daniel, Bendikt and Louise to develop training questions for the stand. A lively discussion emerged and many trees were visited, closely looked at, and discussed. When asked, all agreed that marteloscopes are excellent educational tools especially for themselves as foresters in training.
Louise, Daniel and Benedikt said they will spread the word to their fellow trainees and try to organise a visit with a larger group for a full-fledged training. Andreas expressed that he is happy to support and conduct such a training event.
