New research on tree-related microhabitats in Europe

Tree-related Microhabitats (TreMs) are crucial for biodiversity since they host thousands of species. TreMs are discrete habitat patches borne by trees and cover a wide range of lifespans, from days to decades to centuries. The taxa associated with such discrete and sometimes highly temporary habitat patches are likely to be sensitive to spatial distribution because...

Where tradition meets transformation – Walking Austria’s forest floor at this year’s 10th Annual Integrate Network Meeting

“Autumn arrives, and our Integrate Meeting already comes along”, opens Bernhard Wolfslehner (EFI) this year’s Integrate Network Annual Meeting with a vivid reminder of our get-together in Luxembourg, “when we were watching bats and having a drink in a cave”. As is tradition by now, around 40 Integrate Members and other colleagues from within the network and beyond gathered end of October to discuss the European state of the art of Integrative Forest Management. This year, the current Integrate chair, Georg Frank, invited members to his home country Austria to draw attention to private forest ownership and to discuss integrative case studies and local measures for biodiversity enhancement.

Managing forests virtually

Did you know that there are over 240 special one-hectare forest sites called marteloscopes in 26 countries that are used for field-based training and education of forestry professionals, students, forest owners, policy makers and even the broader public? This unique set of sites is brought together by the Integrate Network, facilitated by EFI. In a marteloscope,...
